AverMedia Live Gamer HD – Review and Performance Benchmarks

by Rip

The AverMedia Live Gamer HD is different from other HD capture cards on the market for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it has a built in H264 hardware encoder. Second, it comes with all necessary software to stream your gameplay to TwitchTV. Third, it is a PCI-Express add in card for a desktop computer, not a USB/Thunderbolt solution. When looking at PCI-Express add-in cards for capturing or streaming your gameplay your options narrow down to the BlackMagic Intensity Pro, Hauppauge Colossus, and now the AverMedia Live Gamer HD. The Colossus is great for capturing gameplay, but has many seconds of lag making it inappropriate for streaming. The BlackMagic Intensity Pro is what I’ve been using the past few months and it works well for streaming, but is limited for capturing gameplay as it requires enormous amounts of hard drive space for its uncompressed capture. When streaming PC games the Intensity Pro is of no help to the encoding process as it does not have a hardware encoder, thereby using your already burdened CPU to do the encoding.

From reading the box, the AverMedia Live Gamer HD looks to be the middle ground – good for streaming, better performance when PC gaming, smaller file sizes with good quality when capturing. For people with slower computers that can barely handle streaming, this may be the ideal card for them. I put the card to the test and see if it lives up to the hype. NOTE - the Youtube clip is a summary, so read on through the full review for the full benchmarks

The latest trailer for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on the WiiU shows that Tekken Ball is making a return! Looks like the WiiU version has been getting all the bonus content love – here’s hoping some of it gets sent back to the PS3/360 versions as well. A bunch of screenshots available from the Tekken facebook page as well.

Mad Catz Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Fight Stick TE-S+ Unveiled at PAX

by Rip

Over at PAX 2012 the brand new Mad Catz Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Fight Stick has been unveiled and its got some new features! Details aren’t clear yet, but it looks like the art is easily swappable and they have a new non-slip bottom as well. For the PS3 version they’ve also given a nod to the Namco / Tekken fightsticks of the past (I feel like I had this idea awhile ago..) by making the stick and buttons yellow! So sick! Check out the pictures they’ve released below (I’ve added a picture of the original Namco stick as well). The stick will be available for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and the WiiU.

Cant wait to try out that new bottom as its the only thing I felt was missing from previous Mad Catz sticks!

Tekken Tag 2 – Fight Lab Run Through – E3 2012

by Rip

As mentioned in my E3 Impressions & Recap, I got the chance to run through the Fight Lab demo for Tekken Tag 2. It seems like it will be a good tool to teach people who are totally unfamiliar with Tekken how the juggle/sidestep system works. The sidestep section that was included could definitely be expanded upon. Would be nice to see more movement tutorials in here as well – maybe a minigame where things are exploding in front of you and you have to backdash them. Then add on to it with say, avoid object exploding in front of you with a backdash, then hit a target in front of you. The super physics for B! and stuff were fun to mess around with as was the Turbo mode. Makes me wonder if TTT2:Turbo isn’t a bad idea.. The developers are very interested to see what everyone thinks, so be sure to sound off in the comments if you have any suggestions/criticism

Tekken on Wii U (Video Clip)

by Rip

Short clip of Tekken on the Wii U! Most interesting is that the stages look to be taken from TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT 2… Probably just sharing resources, but its interesting nonetheless! Also, I received confirmation today that it will be a fighting game, not some kind of RPG or 3rd person shooter etc, and judging by this short clip it does look like Tekken as we know it. Graphics look better than PSP Tekken 6 and the customization looks REALLY interesting as you can literally DRAW on your characters face to tag on them.

EDIT: ALSO, be sure to check out THIS video with Katsuhiro Harada that demonstrates a lot of the features of the game: Create a stage, tag opponents face, practice mode, etc.
